Breakdowns on US-491: Yah-Ta-Hey and the Road North of Gallup
Not every breakdown happens on the interstate. Head north out of Gallup on US-491 — this is not I-40 — and you are on a two-lane highway that runs up through open, high country toward the Navajo Nation and Shiprock. If your vehicle quits out there, American Muffler & Towing has you covered. We are a family-owned shop in Gallup, and the road north is part of our regular service area, including the Navajo Nation.
Yah-Ta-Hey sits just north of town at the junction of US-491 and NM-264. Past it, the highway opens up — long stretches, big sky, and not a lot of services between points. It is beautiful driving, but a two-lane road brings its own risks that an interstate does not.
Why a two-lane highway is different
On I-40 there is a wide shoulder and steady traffic. On US-491, the shoulder can be narrow, and traffic moves fast in both directions with only a stripe between you and oncoming cars. If you break down here, where you stop matters as much as what broke.
A few things to keep in mind:
- Get as far off the road as you safely can. A narrow shoulder still beats a travel lane.
- Turn on your hazards so drivers who crest a rise see you in time.
- Stay buckled and stay put if you are in a tight spot — standing on the pavement near fast traffic is dangerous.
- Note a landmark or the nearest junction so we can find you quickly.
Then call. Our roadside assistance comes to you with jump starts, lockouts, fuel delivery, flat-tire changes, and winch-outs. A real person answers, 24/7, and we will talk you through where to wait safely while we are on the way.
Heading toward the Nation
Plenty of folks use US-491 to get home to the Navajo Nation or to reach Shiprock and points north. That is a long haul on a road where a small problem can leave you waiting if you do not have the right number saved. We know this highway — the junctions, the grades, the spots where signal drops — and we will get to you.
Honest, up-front quotes, every time. We tell you the cost before we roll, whether you are in town or twenty miles up 491.
When you need a tow, not just a hand
If the fix is bigger than roadside, we will tow you. Our towing runs light, medium, and heavy-duty, with flatbed and wheel-lift, and we can bring your vehicle back to Gallup to get looked at. Once you are here, we handle auto repair, exhaust, and tires under one roof.
The high country north of Gallup is worth the drive. Just go prepared: keep your tank up, check your tires before a long run, and put our number in your phone before you leave town.
